Sunrise over Edinburgh, from Fife. Making the most of all the daylight on a mercifully dry day.

Lunchtime and I’m eating soup while dreaming sadly of last week’s lunch in a restaurant where they served us croquetas in a giant ceramic croqueta.

WFH in school holidays was always carnage of tearful holiday camp drop offs and endless prepping of snacks. Taking a moment for the fact that kid 1 just made and delivered a cinnamon bun to my desk. Now to train him to make decent coffee and I think he's finally a net benefit to my writing process.

Next week, we're launching our BMJ Medical Humanities Topic Collection on charity and children's hospitals. Thrilled to include authors from PhD to Prof, and studies from Finland & Mexico as well as the NHS. All the details are on the flyer and all the papers online now:

Nearly two years I’ve worked at UoG and still never not lost when in the Gilbert Scott

Final journey of my (ill-advised, but fun) 4 confefences in 4 weeks is the ferry home from ESA midterm conference in Belfast.
There’s a very energetic kids pirate disco on the ferry, and I’m listening to them screeching Pink Pony Club in unison.

I know there are worse toilet situations these days but good lord, how am I meant to discern that this is the ladies? Even when wearing a skirt I… also have two legs?

Everything in the news and on here feels quite awful just now, but after the school run this morning I stood still for a minute and a bunch of long-tailed tits started shouting at each other and it was lovely. So here‘s a hasty photo of one of them.

Quite shocked, and genuinely confused, to see the saltire hanging the length of a street in Yoker today. Quality of photo reflects how perturbed I was.

Unclear whether this is from the poster authors or a passing H-index hater

Morning set up at @css-conference.bsky.social for @anamelopsi.bsky.social session on mixed methods for complexity. In a conference heavy in CS and maths am excited to be in a room with COLOURFUL STUFF!

Milan, Lucca and Siena by train has been wonderful, but my phone photos are almost exclusively train bins (which delight my son), and a chronicle of hotel coffee machines I have failed to produce coffee from.

Plans for finishing conference slides on the 7 hour train to Milan looking ambitious, as the uni travel agency managed to book me a seat in an ‘area allegro’ where we are encouraged to ‘travel joyfully with positive mood’.

So close to York and @easp-spa-2025.bsky.social but so far. zooming past this morning as we take advantage of being able to go on holiday in first week of school holidays for first time since I joined the Exec pre-covid!

Beautiful York in the sunshine, during an impromptu team outing to visit Criminally Good Books at lunchtime.

Joining @lizzysuch.bsky.social webinar for the SIPHER Consortium: really value the opportunity to reflect on what we have learned at the end of our 5 year system science consortium.

The most January-ish of Januaries is finally done. With an early February birthday I always find it a more cheerful month. Plus, snowdrops.

An upgrade from the predatory publisher emails. One from Wiley (who I do edit a journal for) welcoming me as an editor of… a different journal. Operations Management, here I come!

Morning! Love a wintry sunrise over my personal favourite industrial wasteland in Fife

My daughter has been sewing these festive scrunchies in aid of our local cat shelter. She’s a wee Bobby dazzler, and this has melted my heart. (All sewing skills come from her dad).

St Cyrus beach sunset (am sadly on a train, not on the beach). Best beach in Scotland.
