In 1987, I attended a massive march against one of the worst Sundowns Towns in America: Cumming, GA. It was lead by the MLK Center in Atlanta, Hosea Williams, Coretta Scott King. Marjorie Taylor Green was 13 at the time. This was her stomping ground. This place incubated her hate. Don’t trust her.
THOUSANDS IN CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH JEERED BY CROWD IN GEORGIA TOWN By Dudley Clendinen, Special To the New York Times Jan. 25, 1987 This small town in Forsyth County was overwhelmed today by civil rights marchers, members of the Ku Klux Klan and their sympathizers and an army of National Guardsmen and law-enforcement officers who kept the opposing groups separated. Guarded by what a spokesman for the Governor's office called "the greatest show of force the state has ever marshalled," a crowd of marchers estimated at 12,000 to 20,000 funneled slowly into Cumming, where a week earlier counterdemonstrators, throwing stones and bottles, disrupted an interracial "walk for brotherhood" prompted by the all-white county's racist legacy. I was thinking about this. I was already boycotting Disney because of Gaza, and I’ve seen a bunch of people annoyed at people being pissed about this and not other things. But it’s also very very bad. So if this is what gets people slightly more awake, I’m ok with that.

I've got a great photo for today's #BlueSkyArtShow theme of #angles, but there is a long explanation. In short, this is Al Clayton. He was one of my father's best friends and my photography mentor for a long time. He was also a VERY famous photographer. READ MY ALT TEXT!
This is Al Clayton. If you look at his Wikipedia page, you'll see that the photo of him was taken by me. Al is known for his photographs of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, etc, but he's also known for photographing people living in poverty in the rural American South in the 1960s. This 1967 photography series was instrumental in the redesign and expansion of the Food Stamp Program when Senators Edward Kennedy and Joseph Clark used the images in hearings on hunger and malnutrition in the United States. The photographs were later published in the 1969 book Still Hungry in America with text by Robert Coles and a foreword by Kennedy. Here's what's cool about this photograph. I was telling Al about how in Adobe Lightroom, you used the series of keystrokes "LL" to darken the edges of the screen to see your crop. He left the room and came back with these L's. These are the tools he used to consider the crops he made to his print photographs. His advice was always to crop in a way that suited the photo rather than to suit the frame. Al was hilarious and supportive and weird as they come, and I miss him immeasurably. He was one of my "three dads." He and the other of my "dads" who weren't my actual Dad died a week apart. My real Dad died a few years later. End of an era.

The SUNDAYS Reading, Writing and Arithmetic is the debut studio album by English alternative rock band the Sundays. It was released in 1990 on Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom, and on DGC Records in the United States. The album's title is a reference to the band's hometown, Reading, Berkshire.
