This maps screenshot shows how big the gap used to be, where the striped northbound bike lane ended until it picked up again after the wide intersection.

Another small detail: We also collaborated to extend the Grand Ave painted bike lane striping, so there is less of a gap where a new sidewalk extension was installed. It doesn’t offer physical protection, but it was an easy, low cost adjustment.

Last year Piedmont was working on a pedestrian crossing upgrade at Grand/Linda. I was able to get involved & work with staff to upgrade it w bike left turn features as well, including a curbside waiting space & flashing beacon push button oriented to the street.

This project coming next year is making some bus access and bike/walk changes to that underpass, but still not nearly enough IMO.

A bike/walk bridge from 65th St to the Bay is on the way for construction 2029-2030, At least. All the parking garages is indeed an issue that undermines a lot of the other good work the city is doing.

Similar to Oakland DOT's existing design detail here:

This is what's indicated on the city's landing page. I don't know any more than what's provided here.

A previously proposed $500 Million freeway connector project in South Fremont has been abandoned due to the high cost and environmental impacts. Newer “reduced scope” proposal alternatives are shown below, which are still upwards of $70 Million but at least include protected bikeways.

Construction on the slip turn lane closure at Powell/Hollis in Emeryville is coming along nicely, hopefully wrapping up sometime in December.

The last photo shows the previous conditions, and how much larger the public plaza is now by comparison!

The Berkeley crash was on the one-way part of Telegraph that was previously proposed for pedestrianization as part of the Southside projects, but removed from that initiative. The separately planned protected bikeway will end just south of there.

Antioch’s E 18th is a wide 5-lane roadway signed at 35 mph but with frequent car speeds above that. The crash occurred in an area with a quarter mile gap between marked crosswalks.

@cityofoakland.bsky.social has announced a full closure (including bike traffic) for repairs on Tunnel Road tomorrow (Saturday Nov 15) from 7am to 5pm, as well as multiple weekdays through the rest of November. Check out the closure extent & suggested detour here:

Above ground utilities in parts of Downtown Oakland also cause access limitations.

There has been a lot of discussion in Oakland about amending adoption of Appendix D to apply only where it’s specifically needed. The Oakland bike/walk commission is meeting next week w this on the agenda.

In related news there was a crash at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plaza this morning and cars are backed up. The bridge trail is currently closed. The Bay Area Council thanks @mtcbata.bsky.social for a job well done.
November 13, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Empty words from Andrew Fremier of @mtcbata.bsky.social, which led the charge to close 4 miles of Bay Trail across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge this year, ignoring appeals from Save the Bay & more than 80 other community orgs, boards, & councils.

Or stick with "drive". Here's the most recent streetview image of the same sidepath from a few blocks away. It's a maintenance vehicle, but still...
November 13, 2025 at 12:13 AM
According to Dublin this is a bike/walk sidepath that bike riders and ebike riders are allowed to use. But at a certain undefined point it becomes a sidewalk, where ebikes are banned.

How anyone is expected to know this & abide by the rules is beyond me. I expect the police will make mistakes too.

The difference in pavement quality for the bike lanes vs car travel lanes on Lakeshore Ave in Oakland is a pretty clear visual representation of how much less damage bikes do to our roadways.
November 11, 2025 at 5:17 PM
As a rule of thumb, established bike brands are usually better about the proprietary stuff, compared to ebike-only brands, or non-bike companies trying to “innovate” in the ebike sector.

Another new quick-build mini post-separated bikeway in Oakland spotted tonight, this time on northbound Market St north of 18th St.
November 7, 2025 at 3:08 AM
New quick-build upgrades from painted buffer to post-separated bikeways on Mandela/3rd St south of W Oakland BART are underway now as well (thx @bryanculbertson.com for the video!)

Still dumpsters in the lane as of just now, but no parked cars! The design plan shows a few more posts still to be added toward the Telegraph end of the block.
