Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

You can also bundle up and still enjoy outdoor community events––sledding & skiing, mulled wine around a fire, etc.

Hot places are the opposite. The solution to heat is to push everyone else away. Heat often means drought, which breeds a deeply individualistic mindset.

I have a theory (developed while shoveling snow in Milwaukee this morning)
Cold, snowy places require a sort of solidarity. Help a stranger push their car out of the snowbank; shovel your elderly neighbor's walk; make sure everyone is warm and fed. This creates the baseline kindness you point out.

There a bit in one of his stand ups about getting older and the doctor proscribing him pills for whatever. “How long do I take these for?” “Oh, no, that’s just your life now. You take those pills forever.” Something along those lines. It’s basic, but I saw it ~15 years ago and still think about it
