I will point out I experienced what you're describing ~15 years ago as more people shifted to ordering cards online. A lot of LGSs shifted away from MTG because the money wasn't there for them.

We know they are selling more cards than ever. It's possible they are doing that with a shrinking player base, but annecdotally, UB has brought 3 friends into MTG this year.
