We further tested momentary mental exhaustion and individual propensity to experience distress as moderators of strategy efficacy, and contrary to our hypotheses, reappraisal was more successful at higher levels of mental exhaustion to improve momentary affect.

As predicted, ruminating about stressful experiences predicted worse momentary affect, while none of the other assessed strategies (i.e., distraction, reappraisal, and suppression) were associated with momentary affect.
