I do love (hate) that the 90s have been so totally memory holed beyond Ruthanasia in NZ. The misery inflicted on people was terrible sure but there are like a dozen people with names and address who made dozens of millions from that misery who live happy lives lmao.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

The reason techbroes are scared of AGI is it'll completely invalidate them as a class, there's no need for tech billionaires if we have general intelligences that can make impartial decisions. This is why they want to develop and control any potential for singularity, so it can be slaved to them

This is actually deranged, there's no universe where this style of legislation, complete caving to the industry that privately benefits at the taxpayer expense, is a fair and just process!
How the oil and gas industry helped rewrite New Zealand’s drilling rules
A paper trail shows just how far ministers went to accommodate the industry's wishlist, including giving it access to draft laws.

Another day, another post about how Boomers are the macroeconomic manifestation of Vampires

It's legitimately shocking how few people have even a passing understanding of the second world war. There's not really any excuse esp given even western history from the 1990s has generally been more balanced (noteworthy exceptions such as Beevor).

“That you knew that Ray Chung shared sexual and salacious gossip about a woman he worked with and still believed he should be in control of recommending appointments to boards shows abysmal judgement.”

Little should reflect on Dr Mudgway’s statement & consider his role in misogny in public life.

People calling Trump's attraction towards winners bang on the money, hard to dismiss the fact there's probably some New York solidarity going on. Insane times.

Difficult to know if the mispronunciation in Birnham Wood audiobook is because all the characters are seppos and south Islanders or if they didn't bother to give the reader a pronunciation guide

I feel so bad every time I turn in cross play in a shooter on PC I feel like a premiership footballer signing up for the primary school leagues

In Birnham Wood there's zero mention of maaori in the text for the first third but then two leftist characters have a chat where one talks about the group needing a Reo name for business purposes and another says having a Te Reo name is cultural appropriation and ok maybe I gotta give Catton a pass
November 17, 2025 at 10:00 AM
I'm not saying this as like a damning judgement but like it's pretty clear what appropriation is when a game like Horizon Zero Dawn can draw so directly from so many indigenous cultures yet not be playable in any indigenous languages

The men who refuse to accept this is a systemic problem and who believe there’s no such thing as society are always the first to whine and grievance troll about NZ schools being too female dominated and blame society for presenting men as toxic.

Gotta love da spinoff sometimes.

Oh, police commissioner abusing power and getting it covered up by his mates? Great time to talk about how we need da boiz in blue to clean the streets of filthy homeless people so developers can build apartments in peace.

If you think the McSkimming thing is bad you should see how police are treating young Maaori and Pacific islander communities, you should see how police respond to rape and domestic abuse cases! You don't get to be the head of an org without reflecting the org itself.

If there is one lesson to be learned, strategically, from the war in Ukraine it is that China has near complete spectrum dominance in the areas required for modern war (ironically only lacking in power projection). Western nations should be leveraging soft power.
Could NZ plug into Australian 'drone wall' to keep China at bay?
Dr Malcolm Davis outlines a multi-layer drone defence - from long-range 'Ghost Bats' to cheap interceptors - that New Zealand could plug into.

I guess the thing that shocks me about the general illiteracy regarding the second world war, especially the eastern front, is like ... We have *decades* of history that presents a more grounded view of what happened there but the pop narrative (fuck you Beevor) still dominates this is an issue ...
