A screenshot of Threads posts that say: I implore new authors to trust your gut and not ignore red flags because you think they're lining the path to an opportunity. I had a press interested in publishing Reap, Sow, but after weeks of follow ups just to get a contract that never materialized (not the acquisition editor's fault, they were lovely and communicative), I backed out. Now that press seems to be imploding. If there are repeated stumbles during the first steps, don't overlook them. This is NOT to say the authors who signed with the press or the press staff (who I feel for immensely) ignored any signs at all or had a remotely similar experience to me. I'm strictly speaking to my own experience as a little PSA to newer authors who might not recognize issues or be willing to tolerate problematic behavior because it's wrapped in the shiny promise of publication.

I spent the last few days being a sick couch potato and binging the new Taiwanese drama, Had I Not Seen the Sun. Sooo good, but so annoyed Netflix cut it into two parts (part 2 releases in December). Ep 7 onward gets very heavy/potentially triggering, so check warnings before watching if interested!

Don't you think a Victorian gothic ghost story would be a great addition to the recent lineup of successful gothic period pieces like Frankenstein and Nosferatu? Something about a woman tossing aside societal standards for independence? In a remote seaside manor? With two giant dogs??? Yeah, me too.

Under the weather today, but squeaked out about 300 words in the zombie story.
Text: One minute, the usual office ambience, keyboards clicking, phones ringing, printers chiming with error messages instead of spitting out documents, the next, nothing but screams. I almost rocked out of my chair before springing up, gripping the top of my cubicle to see over it. Everyone around me was doing the same, a crop of curious onlookers sprouting like spring flowers. A crash came from the cafe, glass shattered, and a shriek pierced the panicked uproar. I caught the eye of the woman across from me, a put together soccer mom named Beth, with an unspoken question, What’s going on?, and she shrugged helplessly. A new set of screams, louder, shriller, too tangled to make out any words, yanked our gazes back to the commotion.

I'm not typically into zombies, buuuut when an idea hits...✍️
Text: The world turned to shit and I was one of the lucky ones left walking through it. Movies always show the start as a single, big Event. Things are normal, then everyone's scrambling to grab their kids and keys to hightail it out of town, except every street is gridlocked and sirens are trying to outpace screams. People die in droves, quick and dirty, and then there are no sirens or screams, but the gridlock remains. It's not just streets now, but time itself, stopped at the exact moment the Event started. That's not how it went, though. There was no flash fire and a timeskip to silence. There was nothing quick about it.

Text: “All of this, the fighting, the killing. Even now, after all you’ve taught me, I still had to beg for help.” “You did what you had to.” She hadn’t expected leniency, though Wulfren probably wouldn’t have considered it as such, offered flatly with no coddling undertones. She hadn’t wanted it, either. She shouldn’t have needed it. She shook her downturned head, glaring at the back of Svir’s neck. “I should’ve–” “You did what you should have,” Wulfren said shortly. “You survived.”

I lost my 2 elderly pups 2 months apart earlier this year. Now my 4 year old boy has to go in for blood work to determine why he's having repeat UTIs (something young male dogs aren't supposed to get). Trying not to jump to the worst case scenario, but my mind is a labyrinth of terrible possibility.

Sometimes I just need to take a break from horror and write a bit of fluff.
Text: “You know what they say about a man with a large plume,” Simi continued. Rohga met her friend’s solemn gaze with a stifled snicker. “No,” she managed with a straight face. “What do they say?” She leaned in, palms pressed flat against the table and shoulders squared, as if she were about to reveal some great, secret truth. “He’s wearing on his head what he wishes he had in his trousers.” Adama cut in, slamming down three pewter mugs with a guffaw. Simi sat back and claimed a mug with a small frown tugging at the corners of her mouth. “I don’t think a man wants a feather in his trousers, Adama.”
