So Fleming’s James Bond had a running theme of mortality in the novels. Death was always one step away and never far from Bond’s thoughts.

Ian Fleming wrote CASINO ROYALE in the throes of his own mid-life crisis as he was about to settle down and marry. He was 44 and would be dead 12 years later.

His books are full of Bond imagining his own death, vividly speculating on his plane crashing, etc.
