The enquiry ends with a formative assessment knowledge review and a free writing task where students have the freedom to answer the puzzle of the enquiry question with few prompts aside from some key historical language and a model to guide them.
Huge thanks to the history community!

The stories focused around Liverpool are great for building a sense of depth into their understanding of the impact of the slave trade and also its legacies on places like Liverpool. It's great to also share with students the book Liverpool and the Transatlantic Slave Trade and who is behind it.

The enquiry then moves to Britain looking at the impact of the Slave Trade in Liverpool and also 'beyond the metropole' looking at local stories like Harewood House and Nunnington Hall - thanks to the ideas of @cpalmerhistory.bsky.social for influencing this.

The enquiry then looks at the changes to the Caribbean - influenced by the Liverpool book and the Changing Histories series we use the story of Mahogany to focus on both the environmental impact and the human impact of the plantations.
November 16, 2025 at 5:36 PM
Students then focus on learning about the Middle Passage - studying the story of the slave ship The Zong, the story of Olaudah Equiano and crucially focusing on the resistance of African people on the voyages.
November 16, 2025 at 5:36 PM
Students then focus on the impact of the Slave Trade on the Gold Coast - focusing on how the slave trade impacted West Africa using some of the fab scholarship from Jim Walvin (who was one of my lecturers at York University in the 1990s)

The enquiry begins in West Africa where its crucial to tell students the story of West Africa before the Slave Trade - students have already done on an enquiry on Mali in Year 7

It's been great to adapt our enquiry - How did the Transatlantic Slave Trade change the world - using the ideas from the Liverpool and the Transatlantic Slave Trade book. Huge thanks to @colinmccormick.bsky.social @katieamery.bsky.social and @cpalmerhistory.bsky.social for your fab work on this.

The story goes on to show how the East End changed over the 20th century. Really looking forward to teaching this in the next couple of weeks

Some fantastic world building images in the Jack London book to really immerse students into the East End of London in 1900. If you've not read it, I would heartily recommend it

Inspired by the story of Angel Meadow in Manchester for teaching Industrial living conditions for OCR B, I've done something similar for the East End of London in the 20th century using the amazing The Abyss of London by the aptly named Jack London. This story really helps build the East End world

Strongly agree. So many 17th century enquiries miss out King James I. He’s not just fascinating but his reign is crucial foundational knowledge to understand what comes next. Here’s a story we use to kick off our enquiry.

Revised story of Frederick Douglass to work as a full lesson to really support students to see the big picture of the Civil War and Reconstruction. My students find this enquiry hard and the idea is to see the era through the eyes of Frederick Douglass but focus them on the key takeaways.

Shout out to those involved in Connected Worlds. I adapted some ideas on Samuel Pepys and this landed so well in teaching the Restoration. The story made abstract concepts so concrete enabling my students to think deeply about change in the 17th century. You could hear a pin drop during the story.

Whole class feedback. Took in sample of 8 books - deliberately selected below target students and those who wanted feedback. Share key learning from the sample with rest of class for whole class feedback. Took just 30 mins but great way of checking understanding and useful whole class feedback
