Pennine Way enthusiast since 1973. Social account. No politics. My second favourite National Trail is Hadrian's Wall. Also a Great Outdoors Challenge 10x+ "Leg End". Allotment holder.
I am really pleased with my first 10k walk 6 weeks after my back operation, carrying a front cross body rucksack chest bag. Beautiful day. Loving the autumnal colours & the sunshine. Illness resets your priorities. Good health is your greatest asset.

Not quite a #RomanFortThursday but a watchtower aspiring to be one on @hwpath.bsky.social?

It's a bit wintry weatherwise today, so I decided to pick the last remaining peppers in the garden rather than lose them to the coming cold weather. Not too shabby a harvest? Added to my allotment grown butternut/pumpkin, with onions & and rice, they will be quite delicious.

Here's one local for you. I saw this on a recent visit to Colchester.

Our new neighbours have builders in drilling all the walls in their house to embed all their electric cables into them. This prompted a spontaneous 12 mile walk in the countryside to escape the noise. Here's a collage of what we saw on our walk today.

Here's 2 I spotted on my walks in North Yorkshire last week. Shaggy Inkcap & brown roll-rim mushrooms?

It's definitely my very last picture of this year's pumpkin & butternut squash harvest. This butternut weighed in at 3,612g. The pumpkin is a Muscade de Provence from Franchi. It's really great for eating. Nutty & spicy.

Back onto the allotment tomorrow to harvest the last of the summer crop. It's been a great week in Settle, though. Out walking every single day. Here's a photo from that week away to celebrate #FingerPostFriday

My video of a (small) salmon attempting to leap Stainforth Force. Watch to the end to see it!
October 9, 2025 at 2:49 PM
Sadly, our last day at the cottage in Settle, so we walked up to our old favourite, the Hoffman Kiln. Well worth a visit, & free! Lunch in Stainforth, passing the old Youth Hostel on the way in, then back via the Force where we saw a salmon aleaping (see separate video).

Gentle walk around Langcliffe village today. Lots of quiet autumnal lanes. Saw a solo salmon leaping at the nearby weir.

Some more photos from my Gargrave to Skipton canal walk today.

Walked from Gargrave to Skipton along the delightful Leeds-Liverpool canal. Skipton has plenty of great walking shops, unlike my home area, where most have closed. Since I last walked this route, the towpath has been upgraded to cycle track status.

A quick video of Scaleber Force (our lunch stop) to show you how beautiful it is.
October 6, 2025 at 5:45 PM
A Settle circular walk today with the main objective being a return visit to Scaleber Force. The water at Settle Hydro, with its Archimedes Screw, was far less forceful than just a few days ago. The Ribble, lined with Rowan trees in places, provided a great coffee stop.

A short video of Stainforth Force today.

Much better weather today. Out via Langcliffe weir & Stainforth Force on Ribble Way, then Feizor via Dales High Way & Stackhouse via Feizor Thwaite. No salmon spotted as the river was too fast for leaping? Beautiful autumnal colours abound.
