I agree with Chris, I would not call this as Dark Chestnut. Did some checking on these with Phil a couple of years ago. ie, what do you think, then check it. We both got some wrong. The ‘intermediate’ ones are simply not identifiable with certainty we realised. Classic ones of either are ok.

Very interesting William. I had one at the same time and that ones gone off for a check. Mine was very worn so didn't even bother with a photo. Vittata would be a new moth for here 🤞

Thanks Dave, its one I've always wanted to see. I assume fairly regular around the New Forest?

Ok, my answer would be to just visit those locations anyway and go birding there, rather than just chasing a bird than someone else has found. Only my contentious opinion of course!

Martin, I’m going to play Devil’s Advocate here, and ask the question….Why? What will it achieve apart from causing you lots of stress and depleting your bank balance? As you can tell, I’m not a fan of listing!

Thanks Steve, yes I really must make an effort next year with lures. I think 500 macros is completely unattainable unless global warming goes off the scale or I live to 120! We'll see! 👍

Ha ha! I wish! Macros are on 475 with Druid and Crimson Speckled new this year. I recently totted up the micros at 375+, so garden list of 850+. There are certainly way bigger totals out there, but I do ok for sure! That's all adult moths, no leaf mines etc. Still never had a Clearwing either!

Steve, yes, new garden macros do slow down at a rather alarming rate as the years go on. This year I've had two!

Cheers John, couldn’t see them from Osprey Rd, looking straight into the Sun!
November 20, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Thanks Andy, I didn’t see a single Merg and I looked hard! I couldn’t see the area off the causeway though because of the sun. I walked all round to Castletown as well, none there. Disturbed maybe??

Impressive tally for an inland county Steve. Being near the coast in Dorset gives me a very unfair advantage! Still a few gaps to fill here, I've not had any Clearwings for example.

Shhhh, quiet Lyn, I think she's forgotten! 😆

Thanks Steve, I need to work it out, but probably about 400. I’ve not been doing micros as long as macros though.
