Sanderling at golden hour, standing amidst surf bubbles, facing right. The bird is standing as tall and proud as I’ve ever seen a sanderling stand (nice tongue twister huh). Her head is high and her legs are stretched. She is in winter plumage: white below, white neck, white nape, with wings and crown flecked in black. She has a faint broad smudgy eye line and black legs. The sand is steel blue in the sunset and the surf bubbles are white with a brown-yellow tint.

Brown headed nuthatch hanging head down on the side of a feeder. The bird’s back is turned toward you so you can see her steel blue back, her neat gray folded wings, and her teenie tiny tail, but her head is rotated so that you can see her full profile: white cheek, chestnut crown, and shiny dark brown eye. Her bill is sharp and long and pointed nearly straight down. The background is dull unfocused gray and brown.

Prothonotary warbler perched on a diagonal branch. Super bright yellow all over, this bird’s body faces the camera but his head is turn up and to the right for a handsome profile shot. The wings are folded to the sides but are mostly not visible. The undertail is white. The jet black eye and beak set off the yellow and the green which constitutes part of the background. The rest of the background is unfocused gray-brown bark of a tree trunk.

One of our tiniest birds, a ruby crowned kinglet, on the grassy ground at sunset. He is facing right, toward the light. The round boy is green-gray above and lighter below. He has a tiny straight black beak, a handsome oval-shaped white eye ring, black wing and tail feathers edged in bright yellow, and, barely visible here, a brilliant red crown. The setting sun reflects in his teeny tiny eye.

Male and female mallards. The male is on the left side of the frame facing right. You can see only his green head and his yellow bill and his brown breast and part of his white back. Most of the frame is filled by the female, whose body faces left but whose head is turned under in standard preening position. Her body is beautifully mottled in various shades of brown and her white and blue secondaries are clearly visible. The background is uniform bright light gray.

Spent some quality time with this unworldly creature earlier this evening #birds
Great blue heron at dusk, backlit. The tall ling-necked bird is wading in and the still water is halfway up her legs. Her body faces the camera and her head is turned to the right. Long white plumes fall down her gray front and and her wings are neatly folded around her back. Her undersides and her neck are gray and she has a handsome dark blue crown. Her yellow eye looks out from behind her long knifelike beak. The colors are muted and the background is mostly calm gray water and green brush along the far shore.

Female anhinga perched on a post, side view, facing to the right. This is a long lanky bird with a black tail, oily black wings neatly flecked in white, and a fabulous long brown S-shaped neck. Anhingas are sometimes called snake birds because they sometimes gyrate their necks in odd and surprising ways. Here though the bird’s neck is in a strong curly S position. The bird has a small head and a long daggerlike bill. The sun reflects in her eye and you can see the marsh behind her, but most of the background is composed of bright blue and partly cloudy sky.

I shared this handsome boy with you last month and he is back today as my contribution to the #birdoftheday theme of Standing In Water because he is definitely doing that #birds

The bird’s head is turned to the left so you have a nice profile of his brown head and long brown beak, which is held down against the bird’s body. The wing feathers, folded across his back, are brown edged in white. His legs are short and you can’t see the feet because they are buried in water and possibly sand. His dark eye shines in the sun. The shot is taken at a low angle so the background is light blue sky.

My least photographed bird is the Henslow’s sparrow, seen in April 2024 and probably never to be seen again, at least not this clearly, for the rest of my birding days #birdoftheday #birds
Henslow’s sparrow perched, facing left. This is a small bird with a cinnamon back, streaked sides, a pale throat, nice dark crown stripes, and an orange-ish wash over the head and sides. He has a nice light-colored conical beak and is looking over his left shoulder. The background is bright unfocused green.

She has a mottled red breast and white underparts and a black beak and a nice white eyering. Her head and wings are light brown, not blue.
