So, we're Americans, even though there are many other people and countries in the Americas. Nobody planned it that way, it's not entirely logical, but that's how it is and has been for centuries.

And, of course, the USA was the first independent post-colonial country in either North or South America. When we started calling ourselves "Americans" as a nationality, we weren't appropriating the term from other modern sovereign nations in the hemisphere because there literally *weren't any*.

Why do we alone use "American" as a demonym? For reasons amounting to "it just sort of happened that way." No other accepted native or European name specifically for the middle third of the North American continent. No obvious alternative construction in English from "United States of America."
