Playing D&D tonight 😁 thought I might share a bit more about Esdras. Our two Dwarf kingdoms are a few hundred miles apart. Dissident Dwarves left Uthor Batein long ago and founded Uthor Karzen in a mountain range much closer to the Human settlements and to the Elven Kingdom.

We recently prototyped a system for randomly occuring challenges in our levels in Surfpunk. As players progress in challenges, the gauge fills up and the reward spawns from the trapdoor. What challenge would you propose? Now taking suggestions.

Tell me you’re a self-abusing gamer without telling me you’re a self-abusing gamer.

Behold, the World of Esdras!

The longest-running homebrew world I ever ran as a DM. And because I’m a professionally biased #gamedev, it has gone through a never ending iteration process. See how it looked in 2014 😂

Something I often do for #battlemaps and #fantasymaps in my games is adapting something inspiring that someone shares instead of creating from scratch.

For instance my city of Protidia needed to be quite big, so I started from this great map from Wisened_Cascadian on #inkarnate and modded. #dnd

How come irl I have the diy skills and resourcefulness of a common rock, yet as a kid I could finish this game with oven mittens on?

The Boss Room of the last #dungeon I ran in #dnd. It's the central tower of a large palace (so all roads led to it). The device in the center hung from the ceiling, accumulating charges for each level of spell that was cast during combat, sending a meteor down every 10 charges.

The #videogames that made me:

Post a video game gif from the year you were born.

Oh no! Why did you make me google that 😭

Today I was introducing my son to Twilight Imperium 😅
We used the 2-players community variant called ‘Princess’, look it up it’s surprisingly decent. It’s lighter than the real deal, but great for learning the game.

First published #videogame I was credited on (as level designer) is ‘Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus’ back in 2010

It was a rudimendary first person shooter for first gen smart phones, but it worked!

Does anyone remember playing that?

Was going to reply Ro Laren but actually no! It’s the entire cast from the ‘Lower Decks’ episode in TNG!

Fun fact: my inspiration for naming ´Mages of Mystralia’ came from a long-running #dnd campaign in my friend’s homebrew world. Mystralia was a recluse kingdom where magic was frowned upon. For the videogame, I had help from Ed Greenwood to flesh it out more 😅

I wonder if Olan Rogers has a Bsky accnt?

I don’t know why, this week I thought about Final Space - the best animated #sci-fi show I’ve seen. Poignant, funny, exciting.

The series cancellation was so painfully relatable. I too have a projet I refuse to let go💔
Hang on to your dream projects folks!

Today, a loadout menu for Surfpunk :)

One of the more memorable dungeons of my last #d&d campaign. An ancient hideout of shadow god cultists accidentally uncovered in the deepest levels of a mine at Anor-Bātim.

With multiple secret areas and environmental challenges :)

Déformation professionnelle: I’ve always been a fan of games that have a built-in level editor, esp those 3:

Excitebike: my first experience designing levels at age 10 triggered something in me

Portal 2: back then I’d just started my career in games

Mario Maker: made me admire nintendo even more

My kids loved Jurassic Snack and Takenoko at that age.

Really depends what you're into. But I received a kickstarted project called "Deep Shelf" recently that I quite enjoy.

It's a heavy game that lasts 2-3 hours. Economic engine game, a bit of asymmetry with factions. Beautiful product design.

Another #homebrew city in my #ttrpg campaign, inspired by a concept by Nilesh Parmarkar.

This dwarven fortress is both the center of power and the gateway to Thoremüyr, a sprawling underground city that Dwarves built to survive an apocalypse, ages ago.

I get a bit carried away when DMing D&D 😅

Here’s a city map I made of my homebrew Elven City in my latest campaign. I drew inspiration from this concept art by Min Bae.

3 #boardgame extensions that became the norm at our table:

Arnak: Expedition Leader added much needed assymetry, depth

Hogwarts Battle had painful rng decks before the Monster Box of Monsters. Thank you card banishment!

Twilight Imperium 4 was a good game already, but Prophecy of Kings, omg 🤯

Hard to choose just one aspect of my identity to share as my introductory post on @bsky.app, but I guess #boardgames is a good one. I’m a #gamer, video or otherwise.

No better way of spending time with friends and family. Tho it’s not easy to maintain friendships during a game of #twilightimperium
