It's a mix of protection for you in case a surface is unclean but also it anything happens to get on it, you can just spot clean it with a wipe and throw it in the wash if it's made of washable material :)

Also take advantage of disability toilets/bathrooms! 6 have an adult changing table, but at the very least, it's more private

If you go 24/7 I highly recommend a diaper bag! I used the laptop compartment in my school backpack as a pocket for spare diapers, a pack of wipes, a dozen diaper bags, and a thin towel

Northshore sell diaper bags that I recommend! Then I put them in a thick trash bag or a thick plastic bag from grocery shops to throw away discreetly

You can lay down if that's easier for you! If you do, I def recommend a change mat, but that could also be a towel, a blanket, or you can make one!

Gloves aren't necessary but you can if that makes you feel safer!

TMI lol: I usually kinda...squat? On the floor and take off the diaper carefully so nothing falls out! Then I use wipes to clean up everything! I put the used wiped into the diaper and roll it up to double bag

I don't like to mess in diapers because of internal shame and emberessment (or sometimes just easier to use the potty) but when I do, I usually go in my room to potty then change in there, open a window, put the used diaper/wipes in a bag, then put it in a bigger bag to take out after I shower
