"fiction doesnt effect reality" has about the same rhetorical weight as "there is no ethical consumpton under capitalism" to me. reductive statements used endlessly by people who prioritize their own comfort and desire for unchallenged treats instead of taking collective liberation seriously

Nakhu fiddled with the carving knife in his hands, rotating it by the hilt. His gaze passed right through it, instead landing far into his memory, lost within the foggy recollection of his childhood. Running after his sister in the fields, swooping in to save her when she inevitably fell into a creek and started wailing. Taking her back to her mother, and wondering where his own was. The soft sound of footsteps took him out of his daydream, and he stuck the knife into the carcass before him. Yazu appeared in the doorway, his height cutting an imposing figure even after all their time together. “I’ve been sent to fetch you,” Yazu said, his voice gentle, as if somehow knowing he caught Nakhu at a bad time. “Supper is ready. Hours prepared it.” “I’m good,” Nakhu replied. “I’ll eat on my own.” Yazu moved to leave, then stopped. He turned back to face Nakhu once more, studying him. Without words, he walked over and sat next to them, thigh to thigh. He took Nakhu by the wrist before lacing their hands together. It was a familiar gesture in unfamiliar scenery – usually any softness waited until the darkest hours of night, when it was quiet and easy to pretend it hadn’t happened. “When you’re like this,” Yazu said, pausing a breath. “I know you’re thinking of her.” Nakhu cringed. They had let it slip some time ago, and regretted it ever since. Aphe was the only other person who knew about his sister and his quest for her. Telling her had been easy. She was capable, and trusting, willing to adopt him into her service on little more than a display of knife tricks and a promise to be honest. Telling Yazu had not been the same. It had spilled from him in a rush one evening, the result of too much stress and anger and frustration after yet another dead end had crushed his spirits. Yazu had reacted in maybe the ideal way, comforting him and being careful not to prod too far, yet Nakhu still felt a sick pang of dread when he realized what he had done the next day. Being vulnerable felt antithetical to his existence. “You’re missing dinner,” Nakhu whispered, slowly but surely letting himself rest into Yazu’s touch. Yazu smirked, a small breath of laughter leaving him. “I’m aware.”
