reflective question that @irasocol asks people with whom we work and one worth asking staff at the end of every school year: ” what learning questions and conversations are you having now that you weren’t having at the beginning of the year in your work with colleagues and with students?”

reminds me of going into work spaces set up for “lectures” and immediately rearranging space design to facilitate collaborative work -having folks around me say “why don’t you wait on someone else to do that — stronger maybe?”me saying “but I am plenty strong enough to slide furniture around” :)

Good morning #EduSky as the sch year winds down, some children go home to parents struggling to make ends meet, w/addiction issues, anger, mental illness. Kids may take on full-time adult responsibilities while dealing w neglect and abuse. Summer slide is not just academic. Stay in touch if you can.

We can never take the bonds we build with young people for granted -it takes hard work by adults over 13 years of sch community building so young people to graduate with life skills of empathy, collaboration, resilience, appreciation of others #graduation #EduSky 2/2

What defines a #BlueSky #EduSky moment for you? For me in schools, it’s the bonds we build with learners and each other … the DNA of learning begins with connection, community, care… these allow learners to flourish when faced with challenge, rigor, complexity in their work 1/2

2/2 Teachers who provide options in how students use time, tools, space as technologies of learning create situational environments that support students to make good choices to support their own learning needs- a key life skill. #EduSky

1/2 Over many years in education, I’ve seen a lot of effective and very ineffective uses of technology in learning- desks, paper, textbooks, calculators, blackboards, whiteboards, smart boards, apple2e’s to chrome books, mobile devices of all kinds. What makes a difference? Teacher expertise. #EduSky

someone asked this great question, if you had 20 extra minutes in your daily schedule with learners what would you do? I’d take them outside to experience the seasons and play, write, run, explore, socialize, sing, draw, notice.. What would you do? #EduSky

1/3 I hate that state and local testing consumes so much time in the spring when kids and T’s could be outdoors - journaling, observing, playing, walking, planting, fishing, making, sketching, grilling, — so many experiential options for learning in the natural world #Edusky

Children engage when they want or need something from their learning environment for a social connection, or a driving curiosity abt a question or topic of interest, an urge to do something that demands new knowledge or skillfulness, or maybe they just want to emulate aspirational peers #EduSky

Young writers —power of voice through their words, illustrations, stories, thinking, emotional sensitivity-in all forms of media & genre, young people’s writing is a path to agency & influence-an expression of the heart, soul, & mind. How do we sustain writing as integral to learning experiences?
April 22, 2025 at 12:23 AM
@irasocol.bsky.social and Abe - like the desire paths people walk in lieu of following prescribed sidewalk paths - learning along desire paths is key to sustaining curiosity, investing young people in their own learning, creating agency, and setting the stage to relish learning challenges #EduSky
April 11, 2025 at 5:16 PM
Good morning #thursdayreflection How do young people learn to create, design, make, connect desire paths to learning with authentic, sense-making, accessible,relationship-building experiences? How do they begin to walk their own desire paths? Who owns learning anyway? #EduSky #morning

always a positive to see superintendents who get the power of libraries/librarians to create an environment where as I say everyone can “search, connect, communicate, and make” as they access an array of learning pathways that are unique to libraries. Libraries are an agora of ideas #EduSky

Good morning - #sat #EduSky working w a group of educators deeply committed to and implementing(some for awhile) mastery learning driven by competency development. Mastery can be defined differently but ultimately is abt automaticity, deliberate practice, transfer, stickiness, proficiency. Insights?

Chatting abt last sch spring for HS seniors— what we ultimately hope they take into adulthood- resilience, independence, ethical decision-making, people skills, a lifelong passion for learning, a spirit of volunteerism, curiosity, deep knowledge & literacy, empathy. What’s on your list? #EduSky

Want to foster student talent through literacy? Much of the reading in school is “passage” reading tied to test practice. Kids need to listen to whole books, read whole books, converse abt books, read across content areas..ask and respond to peer to peer questions abt books #backgroundknowledge
