After looking at Arunabh Ghosh's Making It Count: Statistics and Statecraft in the Early People's Republic of China (great book!), it seems clear that Yang is a Maoist apologist of the first order, but I just don't have the patience to keep going.

Reminds me of Reinhold Niebuhr's Irony of American History where he prophesied the irony would resolve itself either in contrition or evil.
Looks like we are clearly heading for the latter.
