not saying these numbers are perfect but i think it wld be better if we did spend our time arguing empirics of historical population instead of defending the ad hoc choice of X event as the defining reference point for Our Times.

part of the motivation was noticing tht a "classical education" guide my mom schooled me w/ recommends cycling your kid thru a year each of ancient/medieval/modern history. i find rly suspect the notion tht Homer + the fall of rome + the industrial revolution are the most consequential events ever.

the idea is tht any 2 periods shld be comparable buckets w/ approx. 1bil man-years each, w/ boundaries tweaked to stick to round numbers. names are meant to evoke conventional periods. they're called shifts in the sense of a work-shift as time block.
