Wizard cop. B-list situationist. Used to be cool. I am interested in British politics and detective stories and woodlice and goofy movies about misunderstandings.
big fan of this canva-mashup announcement from Sadiq that reads like the storks are hitting london as part of their world tour

isn't this quite a standard set of prizes for a fundraising raffle? I remember entering a similar raffle circa 2009 to win a bottle of whisky signed by Gordon Brown & Alastair Darling (I did not win)
Look, I know things aren’t great at the moment for (a) anyone, and (b) the Labour Party, but fuck me that’s bleak

my experience working as a bartender was like this, you would get people who would absolutely bang on about 'legitimate concerns' 'where are they flocking from' etc etc who would absolutely recoil from the language Farage is said to have used, even if essentially the policies are just as awful
It's revealing about taboos around racism that the visceral bullying racism of schoolboy Farage cuts through while the much more consequential thinly veiled racism of adult Farage doesn't. Many people need that veil and flinch when it's removed. You can advocate racist policies but not say the words

Obviously this is going to be absolutely ridiculous but also why has Liz prominently placed a Demon Eyes Tony on the shelf behind her?

surely the obvious seat is Hove - Greens came second last time, large amount of left-liberal professionals paying a lot of rent to live in tiny damp flats and the sitting MP is Peter Kyle
I don’t think I’m over interpreting but Polanski seems to hint quite strongly in his Rest is Politics podcast that he’s thinking of running against Stella Creasy in Walthamstow. Think that would be a pretty brave move (in the Sir Humphrey sense). One of the v few Labour with a genuine personal vote

We watched Planes, Trains and Automobiles yesterday and it's striking that there are so few other major characters apart from Steve Martin & John Candy that Michael McKean is fourth-billed despite playing a policeman who's only on screen for just over a minute.

@louiestowell.bsky.social Hello! We have finally finished reading the Wizard in the Woods (and were astonished by the shocking betrayal by a certain librarian two-thirds in). My child would like to know if we'll ever find out what Kit and friends did next?

ok so I think I've mentioned before that I went to the same university as Kemi Badenoch at about the same time (never met her though) and she is not doing her fellow alumni any favours in terms of endorsing the rigorous intellectual training you get at the uni of sussex

This five bedroom Regency townhouse in one of the poshest parts of central Brighton would not be eligible for the mansion tax by the way because it costs £1,800,000.

drink up to help out
From now on, when discussing the budget, please use “is this measure bigger than the cost to the exchequer of gen Z drinking less” as your metric for assessing whether something actually raises or costs a significant sum

Starmer-ultras using the Peter Hitchens polling quote means that the discourse has finally hit the Hitchens-singularity. Previously the only example of genuine horseshoe-theory IRL were both the far-left & far-right approvingly sharing this image. We're through the looking glass here.

A reminder that Hercule Poirot once covered up embezzlement by a Tory Prime Minister in order to stop Labour getting in at the next election.

If you want a picture of the future, imagine Labour frontbenchers going into Greggs and ordering eight sausage rolls - for ever.

I know this isn't the most important thing about this email but I'm struck by the fact that this list includes two mandelsons and a mandelbrot.
One for the Brits.

Epstein wrote a list of names for Steve Bannon. The first one on it is Mandelson

be careful what you wish for
Personally I'd be pleased to see BBC News disappear entirely. To argue, as many do, that British politics or our news environment would be so much worse without the BBC you have to explain why British politics and news environment is so very bad with the BBC.

not only is anthony horowitz a terrible person but he is also not very good at being a novelist if this is what happens when he is faced with a character getting poisoned and blown up
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."
