Like Bernie, it’s a campaign built on two things: admiring the problems and claiming everyone in office regardless of party is to blame.

And I suspect, like Bernie, she has no idea how to be a legislator who finds workable solutions enough other legislators will vote for.

They don’t have the votes to oppose a single fucking thing.

Voters took all that away from them.

Give them a veto-proof majority and watch what happens. But American voters are too fucking stupid or vengeful to do the right thing.

And you can’t accept that anyone really believes in anything because you don’t. And you can’t if you want a career that’s financially and socially fulfilling.

So the true believers in politics get covered by these reporters like their values are just an angle in the Great Game.

But when you’re reporting on the political beat as if it’s theater and you circulate among power brokers on the cocktail party circuit, you think everyone’s doing it and holding anyone accountable with prison rather than a bad news cycle isn’t fair play.

I think there’s something to that. I also think there’s this weird cultural affectation, reflected and amplified in political media, where holding powerful white people accountable for bad behavior is seen as rude. Sort of like the idea of cops going to jail is framed as a bridge too far.

It seems like over time the number of people held accountable became fewer and fewer until we have what we have today. Impunity among the criminal set.

You can go back even earlier and talk about Iran/Contra and how few consequences came from that.
