Widespread light to moderate snow will arrive late tonight and continue through the first half of Tuesday, with lingering light lake effect snow showers Tuesday afternoon. Accumulations will be relatively minor, but snow will peak during the Tuesday morning commute.

A band of lake effect snow will only linger across Watertown and Fort Drum areas for an hour or two, but it will be enough to bring poor visibilities, snow covered roads and slick spots. This band will continue to drop southward towards the Tug Hill late this evening.

[5:25 PM Update] Lake effect snow is ongoing east and northeast of Lake Erie this evening. Locally poor travel conditions observed with roads becoming snow covered, especially within the main band. Take it very slow or delay travel in the region this evening if possible.

Mixed precipitation will become all snow tonight. Where the rain fell this afternoon, washing away road treatment, wet roads will have the potential to become icy. Travel with caution tonight, especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses which may freeze first.

While the lake effect with continue off both lakes through tonight, the lake effect band off Ontario will be particularly intense and lead to locally treacherous travel conditions. These two areas are only about 12 miles apart on I-90. Avoid travel into the region if possible.

Lake effect snow will continue to accumulate southeast of the eastern Great Lakes through tomorrow morning. A dry snow, that with a brisk west to northwest wind, will lend to blowing and drifting with reduced visibilities across open areas and near the Great Lakes shoreline.

The moderate to locally heavy lake effect snow will continue into Friday. The primary band off Lake Erie will continue to impact the western Southern Tier and far southern Erie County, while off Ontario the main band will focus the heaviest snows southeast of the lake.

Lake effect snow continues downwind of the lakes tonight. As the flow becomes gradually more west to northwesterly and temperatures fall below freezing areawide, expect additional snow showers outside the main lake effect areas at times with minor accumulations.

Strong gusty winds will continue through this evening. The strongest winds will be northeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, including the shoreline on both lakes. Winds will gust up to 45 to 50 mph across these areas. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM Friday.

At 9:13 pm the #Buffalo airport recorded a wind gust of 68mph. This is the strongest wind gust for Buffalo since January 2024.

Lake effect precipitation has started off Lake Erie tonight. As temperatures cool aloft, this band will become all snow through the late evening hours with accumulations northeast of Lake Erie. Later tonight lake effect rain changing to snow will form northeast of Lake Ontario. pic.

Strong gusty winds will continue through tonight and Thursday. The strongest winds will be northeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, including the shoreline areas on both lakes. Winds will gust up to 45 to 55 mph across these areas.

Behind the cold front wind gusts (thus far) have been up to 54 mph at Niagara Falls and the Dunkirk Lighthouse, 53 mph at the Buffalo airport and 52 mph at the Rochester airport. These gusts may go slightly higher through the mid-overnight hours. #nywx
