Tim Dawson, NUJ freelance organiser, told LBC that President Trump’s dismissive response to questions about Jamal Khashoggi’s murder “sends a terrible message to despots around the world” and “appears to give a tacit acceptance to looking away when journalists are killed.”

Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, spoke to LBC about the future of the BBC following resignations from its leadership. Davison called for governance reform and for the BBC to be sufficiently resourced + free from political interference.

Last week the NUJ Belfast and District branch held a public meeting with Belfast & District Trades Union Council to discuss the surveillance and safety of journalists.

The Broadcasting, Entertainment and Arts Unions (BEAU) has shared a solidarity statement with journalists at Reach after the publisher placed 600 jobs at risk.

The NUJ is balloting members at The Mirror & Reach's Scottish titles, encouraging industrial action.

Nick McGowan-Lowe, NUJ national organiser for Scotland, spoke on BBC Radio Scotland earlier about planned redundancies at STV.

“As long as STV wants to have those two ITV licences it has to produce quality news coverage, and cutting a third of the newsroom is not going to do that.”

The @nujlfb.bsky.social held a second vigil outside No 10 on Wednesday. Members carried commemorative cards, read the names of colleagues killed in Gaza by Israeli forces, and handed in a letter co-signed by London-based branches to the prime minister.

On Tuesday, members also held a solidarity event in #Riace, a small hilltop town in Calabria, southern Italy, that was recently twinned with Gaza city. Domenico Lucano, Riace mayor, and Kate Holman, NUJ Life member, added their voices to the demand to #StopKillingJournalists.

The South West England (SWE) branch held a vigil in Bristol last Friday. Ray Tostevin, SWE branch chair, gave a powerful speech condemning the deliberate targeted killing of journalists in Gaza by Israeli forces and urged all to speak out against attempts to “suppress the truth by force.”

The Glasgow branch will host a vigil at Buchanan Street Steps this Friday, 22nd August at 6pm. The branch will hold signs and read the names of all journalists and media workers killed in Gaza.

The South West England branch is planning a vigil on Friday 15 August at 5.15pm. The vigil will highlight that the safety of journalists is a cornerstone of press freedom and the ability to tell the truth, encouraging donations to the IFJ Safety Fund.

At short notice, the Derry & North West branch organised a well-attended vigil at The Guildhall on Monday evening.

Eamonn McCann, NUJ member of honour, said: “This is a deliberate assassination of prominent journalists who are doing their job of reporting the news.”
