To be clear, I was a teenager elsewhere on the West Coast at the same time, and we all basically spoke a variation of California-inflected slang at the time, so I'm not just basing that on one person.

It'd be silly if anyone did. The American English in WYFFH is fine? One of my closest friends in college was a teenager in San Diego in the same time period and I haven't noticed anything off.

'I'm going to university' is perfectly valid American English. You just don't hear it often because that use of university is anachronistic.
Also partially because in American English university implies an institution that has graduate studies and college doesn't, I guess.

It's very easy when you are an unserious person who doesn't want an answer, to imagine that 'prison' is any mechanism of separation from society, when prison is, in point of fact, a specific form of separation from society built on the total control of its subjects.
