Director CUNY ASRC Structural Biology, Prof CCNY Chemistry & Biochemistry plus GC PhD programs. Studies nature's sensors and uses them to control biology; builds new academic & industry culture. Opinions are solely my own.
Very proud of Jimmy Siclari with his outstanding Ph.D. defense on Friday for the Biology/MCD Ph.D. program at the @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social. Jimmy's done exemplary work identifying new bacterial one component signaling systems and triggers, helping us understand their structures & functions.

Hmmm - usually used to seeing it presented to bottle form, looks bigger in the wild

Over the last century, research has helped improve the early detection and treatment of serious diseases. But future progress is at risk unless we continue federal funding for medical research.

Proud to be back teaching CCNY Biochem I this semester, with great questions from the 70 students in the class. Thanks as always to my profs at @ucdavis.bsky.social for providing excellent intros to this field & great teaching when I was on the other side of the lectern!

Timeline cleanse, beautiful evening for WAS @ NYY tonight. Back to science research, teaching, and advocacy in the AM!

Took a greatly appreciated break to see a very greatly appreciated matchup of two former SFG pitchers (Wheeler, Rodón) on a beautiful afternoon in the Bronx. NYY 4, PHL 3 = perfect ending to a great game

NIH & NSF-funded science research leads to breakthroughs and jobs in all 50 states. The importance of this recognized by many Americans, regardless of D or R after their name - including Sens Schumer and Collins #ScienceServesUsAll #ASBMBAdvocates

A very clear sign of a chemistry holiday party in progress!

Hmmm. Let's mix that magnet with this display on my desk ... we've got the beginnings of a nice NMR system!

I typically keep my posts professional over personal, but too psyched to get time with my younger sibs Bruce & Heather this weekend to stick to that. Proud to have us as three public univ products (UCD/SJSU/UCSC) who now work as faculty or staff at public univs (CUNY/SJSU/UCSC)!

Tremendously proud for last week's FDA approval of HIF-2 inhibitor belzutifan – a Merck drug derived from long-term collab btw my group + Rick Bruick's + others to Peloton Therapeutics – to be more broadly used in treating certain kidney cancers (www.fda.gov/drugs/resour...).

An underappreciated benefit of the privilege of starting a new academic environment from scratch? Watching creative people invent new traditions. Example #28: The Ph.D. defense shield, here modeled by the newly-minted Dr. Matt Cleere (thx Paul McQuiston 4 logo; Matt's family 4 awesome shield)

New news: Really proud of my Ph.D. student Matt Cleere in defending his Ph.D. in the CUNY Ph.D. Program today. Did a killer job blending his love of all things yeast with our love of all things LOV photoreceptors!

hello, world! Slowly here from X/Twitter, one step at a time due to a mix of lament for what's been lost.

My intro: I'm a biochemist & structural biologist who studies how cells know what's going on around them. That's taught us basic mechanisms + inspired optogenetic tools and cancer drug
