I'm glad people are talking about this more openly because I think there's so much shame in admitting that, even though you need to be armed somehow to defend yourself, gun access can be dangerous for some folk

Looked it up. Donohue, the author here, is the president of the Catholic League, & also an adjunct scholar with the Heritage Foundation. It has been his life’s mission to defend sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and he is using Kelly’s statements as a further justification in his argument.

Sometimes participation in them isn’t obvious:

“…it was revealed medical centers throughout the University of California system …had contracts with Dignity Health that placed UC clinicians in Catholic hospitals and required them to adhere to religious restrictions on the care they could provide.”

Slightly less intuitive, this is the proportion of hospitals who are part of a larger health systems. This means they have a broader infrastructure which provides financial stability but also creates a greater policy monopoly when other options are scarce or non-existent.

It would also be a mistake to conflate religious institutions with non-profit institutions:

“Despite their stated missions of serving the poor, Catholic hospitals as a group serve a lower percentage of Medicaid-insured patients than do other hospitals and provide slightly less charity care.”

I found this excellent report on the hidden costs of ceding control of community health systems to religiously-run institutions with maps showing communities where they are the only option. It also lays out how this can facilitate discrimination.
