‘A Jest of God’ by Margaret Laurence (1966)

A moving story about a woman in a Manitoba town. Though she teaches at the school she once attended, her alienation runs deeper than others realise. When a man from her childhood becomes an unexpected lover, her inner life is released #booksky

I didn’t enjoy Manaschi but really enjoyed The Devils’ Dance, the main factor seems to be the consistency of the translation. Good to hear that this novel holds up

‘Marketa Lazarová’ by Vladislav Vančura (1931)

At the murky birth of Northern Europe, a showdown between Bohemian brigands draws in German troops. The prose is incredibly vivid, but keeps the spirit of a folktale. The forest warps with the characters once the frost begins to thaw

‘The Family Mashber’ by Pinchus Kahanovich (1948)

A surreal homage to what was once the centre of the Jewish world. A wealthy family spirals out of control after one of them joins the mystics at the edge of society, and a loan takes on a life of its own #booksky #ukraine
