tricky one. contemporaneity via 14C is one part, then compare species composition of the temporally overlapping periods with the rest of the original midden and see if that fits.

does the story change if it is two separate middens?

Usually this is done with 15-20 oxygen isotope samples/shell. Taking weeks of work. For Matt’s sample of oysters, this would usually cost $45k. Instead, it costs a trip to @leizarchaeology.bsky.social + a single oxygen sample/shell (to determine the salinity of the water the oyster grew) 3/3

the sample is a brittle, yellow-opaque flaky thing. Most likely a few thousand years old from a non-mortar using society
