It’s also taught me to be less reactive and helped with my own emotional regulation. I’m parenting myself, too, I guess.

When he’s biking around the city rather than yell corrections at him I pause and let him figure it out himself (unless it’s an immediate danger).

It’s not quite hands-off parenting and it can be frustrating for me because I want to intervene to make things faster but it’s practice for resiliency.

He gets frustrated practicing piano? I tell him to pause, take a break.

Teaching him to get himself dressed & ready & out the door in the morning? Rather than barking instructions to him I pause (even though it’s excruciating because I could just help him) to let him do it himself.

The idea is that when a baby is crying, rather than respond immediately you pause and see if he can sort it out on his own first. If not, then you intervene.

But it’s not just babies. I still do this (I just realized) with my 6 year old.
