one thing that receives almost no attention is that the only reason he ran for president again is because he had to to avoid prosecution for a litany of crimes, the whole plan was: 1). Take shelter in SCOTUS-granted immunity. 2). Loot.
trump is the president in the sense that he holds the office but he very clearly isn't the president in the sense that he has basically relieved himself of its duties
Trump’s echo chamber:

Very little U.S travel

No rallies or contact with supporters

Right-wing media

Dinners with rich donors and billionaires

Truth Social

What a sad way to live one's life. And what a challenge for political liberalism it is.
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

…ok, I haven’t actually watched Oppenheimer yet but I guess I’m going to have to now
this is why OPPENHEIMER is possibly my favorite movie

it captures everything: science, liberal politics, trying to destroy fascists, and the downsides of having lefty socialist friends who are constantly pressuring you to give to overseas radicals in specific risky ways while trying to get laid

Thanks to the @nypost.com for letting me check an item off my bucket list (“be the target of a meaty hit piece by a world-class NYC tabloid”) and for highlighting @transalt.org proposals for better walking, biking, & transit!

“When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic].”
They're not hiding it, folks—straight up neo-Nazi advertising, from the font to the language to the 11 stars for the Confederacy. Then you have the DHS openly using white nationalist language of "remigrate", which means ethnic cleansing.

This is who MAGA is now.

CHOTINER: Demons don't really exist?

RUMI: No, they're metaphors for boys.

CHOTINER: In your song "Takedown," you use the line "A demon with no feelings don't deserve to live." What's the metaphor?

RUMI: It's a metaphor for killing the...boy?

CHOTINER: The boy as the demon.

RUMI: Yes, yes.

Also, the Nazi winking troll technique that has become completely omnipresent in US government social media. It's out of control. The whole game is to drop as many clues as possible while never quite explicitly endorsing neo-Nazism, so if you accuse them of it they can say you're paranoid.
"Western civilization," the font, the 11 stars - 11 states in the confederacy, for the record.

Why is this never news? Why are we letting our government agencies do this sort of thing while the news agencies report on hallucinated trade deals and act like everything is normal

This bleak (but unfortunately compelling) thread makes me think that the individual human mind/psyche is just ill-suited to being plugged into machines that allow everyone everywhere to be simultaneously talking about everything that has ever happened or could have happened at any time in any place.
This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.

NYT editors get the wall
Headlines like this are extremely dangerous. Because moms of young kids are the people who make the bulk of the vaccine decisions for famillies. And for a lot of them, "reading the news" looks like scrolling past headlines on social media in the spare moments of the chaos of caring for kids.

This is my yearly reminder that

A) The Pilgrims never turned on the Wampanoags. The Puritans who did were a whole different group of people.

B) Thanksgiving became a holiday to celebrate whooping the Confederates.

Sometimes we can just enjoy traditions without guilt!
Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1
