A shot-plotter.netlify.app update? Just a month after the last one? Unlikely, but its happened somehow! This one features some big bug fixes + the addition of nets for men's and women's lacrosse (they might be my magnum opera of playing areas; I maybe figured out one-point perspective for them).

i Think i did this right??
January 31, 2025 at 2:49 AM
for reference, this is what i have of my initial #playplotter experiments, plus some tweaks. it was suggested to me as akin to a digital whiteboard geared towards coaches, i privately think of it as sports-flavored powerpoint, its is probably actually best described as sports-flavored photoshop/gimp

woke up much earlier than normal (i credit jet lag) with a slight idea and reminded myself that i do actually genuinely enjoy coding, and making stuff tailored specifically for you w/o concern for others can be a delight

Hey y'all its a shot-plotter.netlify.app update! This one features the addition of:
- football/soccer net (IFAB/NCAA)
- indoor lacrosse (NLL, customizable)
and:
- ice hockey (IIHF) is now customizable
All additions were suggestions from people, so let me know if you have thoughts of things to add!

okay i Very Crucially both stepped away and ate and am now happier with the state of this viz; please give thoughts and also suggestions for other players you would like to see (from last PWHL season) so i can see more examples and figure out other things i want to change

for a bit more context, this is what I'm tinkering w/ angles for. i have the angles from the goalies perspective, but someone pointed out it could also work for shooter's, so I was trying to figure out if I wanted it from shooter's perspective if I needed to flip it horizontally
December 7, 2024 at 9:32 PM
i Think the answer is no don't flip it, but it still feels wrong somehow. proof of attempting workings:

put this together. it has a flagrant disrespect of basic statistical principles, including an Incredibly Bad xG model b/c i don't know what I'm doing. but if i can figure out how to explain stuff (and then have someone tell me what's wrong w/ the stuff), there might be a kernel of something here?
December 7, 2024 at 4:59 AM
managed to get this just about working (cc @bryanbastin.bsky.social) and have some immediate thoughts about things to tinker with viz-wise (don't pay too much attention to the actual graph contents w/ how few shots have been faced)

Excellent news everyone my really scuffed pwhl goals scraper still works
December 5, 2024 at 3:30 AM
the #nhl schedule viz does look a lil silly with only one game, but it is good bounds checking, at least. good to know, given i have designs for making a bot for it. and the game was at least maybe? seemingly interesting? in the 2nd period? listen this viz is the extent of my nhl knowledge nowadays
November 25, 2024 at 2:48 AM
plus the absolute gel edition, which focuses on absolute goal difference to highlight close games and make blowouts fade into the background, and uses a gel electrophoresis-inspired palette b/c. i thought it was fun and am a sucker for these colors. also maybe b/c of @prashanthiyer.bsky.social iirc?

huge shoutout to @johnbedwards.io (+ @tanho.ca ) for helping me sort out the overlap code, so i can bring y'all the first iteration of the new schedule viz with ... whatever the hell today's #nhl schedule was

need to fix the lie that is the simultaneous games legend (whenever i figure out how to do that in a sane way), but like ... i think this isn't half bad for basically making up those gaps
November 24, 2024 at 1:23 AM
folks ,,,,, we might be doing it

mourning the loss of my nhl schedule viz by f'ing around w/ my favorite viz style: incomprehensible rectangles that look mostly like bar codes
November 10, 2024 at 6:40 PM
cleaning up some old documents on my laptop and dug these WIPs up from circa senior year high school; frankly they are quite a good time capsule of both the kind of literature i was thinking about and also why my data viz thought process is Like That

visiting home for the holidays means getting driven around town to get a haircut and my brows done at an inanely cheap price point
December 30, 2023 at 7:55 PM
i've been looking at the PWHL data for approximately ~15 minutes and i already have questions
December 9, 2023 at 7:10 PM
coming to a tig article near you soon probably here's some SDHL score growth viz (ty @mbm.bsky.social for not only creating this viz but Especially for making it so i did not have to try and name it)
November 12, 2023 at 7:38 AM
my brain hurts now but can confirm even without the proper colors and other dustings of style it is Really pretty @mbm.bsky.social
