Dangerous #shipbreaking practices often slip away from the public eye, we could not miss an occasion to raise awareness of #environmental and human rights abuses

❗Environmental and public health risks linked to regulatory exemptions, gaps in law enforcement, illegal waste dumping and contamination by heavy metals and other pollutants. This is the reality of #ship #recycling yards in #Aliağa, Turkey.

🚢 With a significant number of #ships expected to reach the end of their service life in the coming years, ship #recycling presents a strategic opportunity for Europe to meet its goals on #circularity and cleaner industrial policies

🇪🇺 🚢 Owning one third of the world's fleet, the European Union has a duty to lead the way and set an ambitious example. We will therefore strive to have the development of safe and environmentally sound ship recycling capacity included in the Circular Economy Act.

🏗️ Steel recycling saves 1.5 tonnes of CO2 compared to raw steel. This would lead to huge #emissions reductions and significantly limit #pollution. In the scope of a decade, up to 150 million tonnes of CO2 emissions would be saved, which represents yearly GHG emissions of The Netherlands 🇳🇱
