The Gila National Forest is a 3.3 million-acre national forest in SW #NewMexico. The national forest encompasses the world's first designated wilderness, the Gila Wilderness. The Gila Cliff Dwellings were built by the Mimbres branch of the Mogollon people between 1270-1300.

Alamogordo was founded in 1898 by the Eddy brothers, who brought the railroad to the area, envisioning the city as a rail junction. They named it "Alamogordo" (large cottonwood tree). Initially, it was a dry community, because the brother's first attempted settlement got out of hand...Carlsbad.

The Catwalk National Recreation Trail is built along the steep walls of Whitewater Canyon using metal walkways. The area is open from sunrise to sunset. Originally a route for a 19th-century pipeline to a local mining mill, the current catwalk was built in 1961, rebuilt in 2003 after flood damage.

The Valley of Fires Recreation Area is adjacent to the Carrizozo Malpais, one of the youngest lava flows in the continental U.S. Approx. 5,000 years ago, volcanic vents at Little Black Peak erupted, and the resulting molten rock flowed southward for 44 miles, creating a vast field of basalt lava.

City of Rocks is a unique New Mexico state park known for its stunning, otherworldly volcanic rock formations, which resemble a city skyline, complete with "streets" and "buildings". It is located in the Chihuahuan Desert, roughly halfway between Silver City & Deming.

El Santuario de Chimayó is a historic Catholic shrine, famous for its "holy dirt," believed to have healing powers. Visitors can collect the dirt from a special pit, known as El Pocito. Built in 1813, it's a pilgrimage destination for thousands of people each year.

Corrales is known for its rural charm, an affinity for horses (and other furry creatures), and a thriving arts scene. Historically, this area was settled by the Tiguex and, later, by Spanish colonists. The Spanish corralled livestock here when they crossed the river into Old Town ABQ for supplies.

La Mosca Lookout is an 11,036-foot peak near Mount Taylor, with unobstructed 360-degree views from its summit. It's accessible via a road, suitable for most vehicles when the weather cooperates, though the final section is steep & rocky.

The Bisti Badlands feature a variety of unique rock formations, such as hoodoos and cracked eggs, created by millions of years of erosion on layered sandstone, shale, mudstone, and coal. The landscape was once a swamp in an inland sea during the late Cretaceous period.

I remember the first time my grandmother took me to see the bats fly out. One of them landed in the hair of a lady sitting next to me. She freaked tf out. Mini me was highly entertained by her response, which probably didn't help that woman's overall outlook. The bat flew off unscathed.

San Miguel Mission in #Socorro is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the U.S., built between 1615 - 1627. Though the original structure was burned down during the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the current church was rebuilt in the 1820s, incorporating parts of the original foundation.

Madrid was once a thriving coal mining town. Industrial-scale production started in the 1890s, peaking in the 1920s. When the coal market declined after World War II, the mines closed. The town became a near ghost town before being revitalized in the 1970s as an artist colony.

Bandera Crater is a large cinder cone that erupted approximately 10,000 years ago, creating a 23-mile lava flow & a lava tube system that includes an ice cave. The ice cave is a collapsed lava tube with natural, perpetual ice, the oldest layers of which are over 3,400 years old.

Salmon Ruins is an ancient Chacoan & Ancestral Puebloan site in Bloomfield, #NewMexico. The village was constructed by migrants from Chaco Canyon around 1090 AD, with 275 - 300 rooms spread across 3 stories. There was an elevated tower kiva in its central portion and a great kiva in the plaza.
