Ok you can see my current horrible neoprene phone holder at the front of my gorgeous new saddle help me find one that will look good. I prefer not to have a bunch of tooling that will pick up dirt and I don't have a rear cinch to put it on anymore.

After two days of horrible weather, finally got to put Major's new M1904 McClellan saddle on him and go for a little ride. Happy to report that it fits him beautifully and is as comfy as I remember McClellan saddles being (very).

I think I'm going to replace his bit with something with no leverage because after my wasted youth riding dressage it is a constant struggle not to seek light contact.

Whereas this US cavalry Sgt ca WW1 is about exactly how all the ranchers around me ride and how I'm relearning to ride now, with stirrups that hit about at the ankle with legs dangling and legs under you.

Nah, this guy is Civil War but indicative of what I'm talking about - looks like tippy toes on stirrups and couldn't get his heels down if he tried.

There's honestly some variability in stirrup length but I wouldn't think an insecure base from having your stirrups on your toes would help?

So I am cleaning his feet yesterday preparatory to a ride and uh. That is not great. It is clearly not impacting his soundness yet and I'd like to keep it that way so I promptly sent pics to the farrier who said "I'll be there tomorrow".

He is 20, a former cattle ranch horse who then packed an 8 year old around until the kid decided he'd rather play football. In the pasture he likes to zoom like a young guy, under saddle he snoozes like he's much older.
