It feels like definition of "kart racer" has been pigeon-holed into "cartoony mascots racing in vehicles", regardless of the mechanics or even when the vehicles aren't go karts (the last few Sonic racers definitely didn't use them).

I definitely remember seeing it when I visited Canada in the mid-90s. Didn't feel like it came to my part of California when it was big in the US, but I was only 4-5 then.
