I zigzag my way through the crowd. If the guests remained seated, navigating the narrow spaces between the tables wouldn't be such an effort— A little boy bumps into my legs and almost bounces back. "Wanna mess about with the piano?" I point over my shoulder with my thumb, which is the most ridiculous thing I could've done. "T'd love to." We sit on the upholstered bench and try to channel our musical selves. Our bare arms keep brushing together as we play because we're sitting that close. This seat might not be for two adults. He tries to impress me with a few chords he remembers from secondary school; I aim to make him laugh with random, jerky tunes I make up as I go. The two of us are terrible at this, but we're giggling and having fun. Simplicity is sweet. He probably prefers more adventurous activities though, the celebrity that he is... "Last night, we danced to silence. Tonight, we're creating music." He bumps my shoulder with his and adds in a teasing voice, "We're doing it backwards." I arrive at the office ten minutes early on Monday, thinking it's better than entering a room full of people who will no doubt stare at me as I walk to my desk. Unfortunately, it only delays the inevitable. As my colleagues trickle in, they look in my direction a little too long, some seem to seek me out so that they can... assess the damage? A few girls stop abruptly in their tracks when they spot me, like they weren't expecting me to turn up today. Then, they purse their lips, concealing a smile. Stella waves at me when she gets in but has no time to come and chat. Whispers and giggles quickly fill the room. Some of the girls laugh out loud. They're reminiscing about Navid rejecting me. Stella punching him. From now until eternity, every time I see my colleagues speaking in hushed tones, I'll wonder if they're gossiping about me. There are two types of beautiful people in the world. The type that has you thinking "oh, they're really cute" and the type that rids your mind of all thought and compels you to catch another look, to stare. The man my gaze is fixed on now-from a distance and without his knowledge—falls into the latter category. Ash cradles my fist in his hand and twists it to see the crystal dangling from the bracelet. I frown. One corner of his mouth lifts, as if he's pleased. His gaze meets mine for a moment before returning to the silver hugging my wrist. His thumb brushes the tiny stone, and therefore, also my skin. The touch isn't entirely unpleasant-well, it's not unpleasant at all-but it's highly unnecessary. I spin my hand back around so he can unclasp the bracelet. The action is apparently such a shock that he drops his hand and takes a step back. "Take it off, damn it." I almost punch him in the chest when I shove my hand towards him. Ash takes another step back and grabs his door. "You take it off." And he shuts the door in my face. "I'll just get Stella to remove it on Monday," I snap before hurrying to my room. One of the coolest things about us Chowdhury sisters is that we look so alike. From our personalities alone, you'd never believe we're related. Like the rivers of Bangladesh we were named after, we four don't flow in the same direction. Before today, I didn't gravitate towards the performing arts. I'm all about consuming art, preferably in the form of books and music. Desperate times call for desperate measures though, and volunteering for our community centre's Christmas play is one such measure. I have zero extra-curriculars for my University applications and it's too late to organise anything better. So, that's what I'm doing on the first day of school. It's also the last day of the Summer Fair in our local park, at which the community centre has a stall promoting its Youth Services and recruiting volunteers for the Christmas production.
