Ever wondered what it looks like when you leave ferns unattended in a grow bin for several months?
No?
Well too bad, now you know!

Nerves & Slick didn't mind, but it was getting hard to see them, so the excess fern growth had to go!

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate!

All has been well for me and my froggy family. Still no success trying to get Kooka (NOT pictured- he's quite shy most of the time!) to pair with Tubba. He sings, but I've yet to get any eggs from the two. Hopefully someday he'll make his move.

It was time to change the paper towel in the froglet bin. Which meant corralling all these slippery little goobers into a temporary container.

A throwback to when #oliverthetoad had a Dracaena in her enclosure. She loved to nestle in between the leaves.

The plant is no longer in her enclosure because it got too big. After all, vivariums aren't static- they grow and change just like their inhabitants.

Underrated little joy of vivarium keeping;
Doodles on fogged glass, made by springtails and snails.

Now the dirt is siliconed to the background, and all that's left to do is wait for it to cure before planting. There are a few finishing touches to come. Including painting the glass to cover up the drainage layer.

I wasn't telling the full story when I posted those babies yesterday. Not only do I have a litter of froglets, I have a clutch of eggs on the cusp of hatching. At this stage the egg membrane is completely transparent, and the embryo can clearly be seen!

I have wonderful news! These little Solomon Island Leaf Froglets are a few weeks old and doing great. Fingerzilla for scale.

The boys sing all the time, but that doesn't mean they do so flawlessly. Here, Kooka inflates just the right side of his vocal sac before getting into rhythm.

Red Male Rainbow Stag still going strong! Look forward to seeing what his offspring look like.. but that's still gonna take a while, they're still 4 month old grubs.

Progress on the Mourning Gecko BiOrb has been slow, but its been going.

Shoving your hands into a narrow entryway to chip away at spray foam takes a while. Who could have guessed! I look forward to providing these little geckos with lots of hiding places.

Its easy to fall into the trap of dismissing the species that live around you as being uninteresting- simply because you're used to seeing them. But animals don't stop being beautiful and complex just because they're your neighbors. Take this Leopard Frog example.

Every night, I settle down for a good night's sleep.
And every night, my frogs sing their little hearts out!

Dragonflies are many things. Flashes of color over the water. Viciously efficient hunters. Members of an ancient and successful lineage that dates back to the carboniferous.

But no one can be perfect at everything. Its easy to forget that Dragonflies can't walk!

How do I say this without sounding like a broken record? The shape of Solomon Island Leaf Frogs is so unique.

Metamorphosis is a beautiful thing, but the dramatic shift from one body to another is not without risk. Sometimes for one reason or another, it simply fails.

This photo was shot at Princeton, NJ, during the 2021 Cicada emergence.

And we're back!
Had a great Halloween and hope everyone who celebrates had a great time as well.

Now, #oliverthetoad would like to know; what'd we miss?

Northeast Bugs & Beasts hopes you all have a Hoppy Halloween full of crunchy candy & creepy crawlies!

"But wait my good sir man Northeast Bugs & Beasts" you say, "Its not Halloween yet!"

The Rainbow Stag larvae have reached a size where I felt it was appropriate to give them the good stuff- white rot wood. Colonized by benign fungi and squishy in consistency. Its good for beetle larvae, but I don't give this stuff to hatchlings.

Meet Tubba!

Tubba is an animal who I owe a lot to- without her, Northeast Bugs & Beasts would most likely not exist! I first acquired my initial trio of Solomon Island Leaf Frogs back in July of 2024. Back then I wanted the frogs simply for the sake of enjoying them.

Listen carefully, and you'll hear this Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella) buzz. She was NOT thrilled to be on my hand. These moths are the adult form of 'Wooly bear' caterpillars often seen trundling along the ground this time of year.

Today we have a #whatacreature comic!

Solomon Island Leaf Frogs produce pea-sized eggs that hatch into incredibly, absurdly tiny froglets. These itty bitty newborns could rest comfortably atop a pinkie nail- though the species is so flighty at any age that they would never actually do so.
