A cosmopolitan federation of university-cities, Jeddah is pulled into conflict with both the empire to its north and colonial seafarers.

Notice that this map is virtually unrepresentable using normal auto-tiles. The level of noise + width of the automatic transition through grass means you're pretty much required to use larger, smoother shapes – as befits an RPG, RTS or adventure game with larger maps and looser movement

I can see this being useful for something like advance wars or a roguelike where every single tile has exactly one mechanically significant type, and it's extremely obvious what it is.

I could also see it working for something like golf, where you want tight fidelity despite being tile-based.

One good thing about the dual grid is that it forces higher fidelity.

Consider this subtile grid with a grass base.

There are 0 grass tiles in this screenshot. None of the visible grass is an addressable tile. It’s just the default transition.

This system works really well when combined with strong layers.

Here the water and dirt are in layer 0, grass layer 1, trees layer 2 and so on.

They stack similar to how they would in 3d.

If you have to render in a single layer, though, there are better autotile systems like the one in RPGMaker.
