Monarch butterfly enjoying some blooming milkweed. I don’t blame them, milkweed are fragrant and beautiful.
Milkweed is in the dogbane family, which funny enough so are the popular houseplants called hoyas!
If you look closely, you can see the familiar flower shape - shooting star clusters.

They might not seem like much, but those are ghost bells (Monotropa uniflora). They lack chlorophyll which is why they lack that distinctive green coloration.
They are also parasitic and suck the nutrients from other plants!

My research group has been scouting for monarch caterpillars to track their decline in this region. We found 7 yesterday after 12hrs of scouting.

I absolutely love my partial that Ecto made! It’s lovely, incredibly breathable and lightweight. Also, as a nice bonus, I look adorable as a unicorn.
