Don't ascribe to a particular approach to narrative appreciation what might simply be tiredness.

ie. might be less "try to appreciate what the creators have done here" and more "it's been a long day, please shut up and let me watch M*A*S*H")

I say this as a fellow Tired Dad.

Getting my kids addicted to Edgar Wright and the Coens early on set them up for a lifetime of reference-spotting but also hyper-awareness of story structure. (And a thirst for "12 things you missed in Shaun of the Dead" videos.)

Young person exposure to the perpetual raised eyebrow of Honest Trailers and Pitch Meetings and "every X character..." reels instills a mostly healthy sense of skepticism re: creative geniuses but also a lot of annoying know-it-all-ism.

I mention the skating-at-Cootes thing in this piece, if you're curious:

Recently heard an interview with Jazzy Jeff who said he wanted "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" to have that speaker-blowing 808 drum machine sound all through, but the person mastering assumed it was a mistake, and so mixed it out.

Now he can't listen to it.

Those are some lovely sheets of noise.

My (live karaoke) band still kinda sets up like this, by necessity - I am constantly telling the sound person *not* to mic the drums, as they will be loud enough for a 100-person room.

(But they did sound for Kim Mitchell or Haywire or whoever in the 80s, so they know better...)

Love seeing the stage set ups from this era - stick amps on the floor, plug in, hope for the best.

(I realize there are thousands of bands still doing this in bars and backyards, but not actual touring acts with hits.)

But.... we're the good guys!

Would be funny if most of the endnotes were variations on "WTF? GET ON WITH IT"

(I would not agree with any of those notes, btw)
