this is exactly why Mark Kelly et al did that spot telling military and intelligence officers they can refuse illegal orders — there's no way Hegseth or Trump will EVER accept blame for them
WAPO: “.. Officials in Congress and the Pentagon said Monday they are increasingly concerned that the Trump administration intends to scapegoat the military officer who directed U.S. forces to kill two survivors of a targeted strike ..”

This is stunningly good reporting by two bylined reporters and six credited researchers, and it's undermined throughout by links to an "Ask the Post AI" that delivers insipid answers to its own contrived prompts under the guise of "More context on this article"

Five officials told us that Hegseth had nothing to do with the second strike

Washpost (which broke the story 2 days ago):
“This is ‘protect Pete’ bullshit,”
and
“It’s throwing us, the service members, under the bus.”

Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.

If Admiral Bradley didn’t realize before that these cowards were setting him up to take the fall, he knows it now. Time to hire a good lawyer.

I want Admiral Bradley to know that I admire him greatly and will support him completely, and if he could just lie on the pavement for a minute longer, I need to put this bus in reverse and then into drive just one more time.

Since trump’s re-election a year ago, warnings that his use of the presidency to advance his personal interests is corroding American democracy have grown ever louder.

This is madness! The “no new wars” president is taking us to war with Venezuela.

Bombing ships in the Caribbean, as an ongoing operation, without congressional authorization, crosses the line into an unconstitutional use of military force.

honestly, if you said the goal of this administration was to make cocaine as cheap and plentiful as possible, it would explain like 75% of their actions
in the midst of our supposed campaign against Venezuelan drug traffickers the President of the United States has chosen to pardon the Former President of Honduras, freeing him from his long prison sentence earned for trafficking more than 400 tons of cocaine into the United States

He can’t do this. Lol. Every day he gets dumber.
It should go without saying, but the president has no authority to do this, and anyone reporting the story needs to say as such.

And reminding everyone that he tried to shut up Democrats who talked about following the law.
Every single congressional Democrat needs to be out there, right now, insisting that Pete Hegseth resign right now and announcing that he will be held accountable for committing war crimes.

If you do not demand accountability here and now, they will only become more emboldened.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.

Ordering no quarter, as Hegseth effectively did, isn't a newfangled modern war crime. It was understood as a crime as far back as the Revolutionary War. Washington threatened to do reprisals over it. The bad guy in 'The Patriot' is (very loosely) based off a British officer who was notorious for it.

That's a very important point 🔽

Even if Trump leaves, the people who voted for him will still be there. The USA will be an adversary of democracies for at least a generation. The free world must do everything to weaken them economically.
Every country should be investing heavily in local startups, and growth opportunities, for existing companies that are developing hardware and software that's competing with US big tech.
