This year has been particularly brutal in my circles. I’ve had several of my remaining women peers leave tech. I’m feeling like the last one standing. It makes me wonder when my own expiration date will come.

The definition of “right engineering degree” conveniently shifts. My two BS degrees are CS and math. I’m just obviously non-technical because I went into user experience. Men frequently assume that my degree, if they think I even have one, is art or maybe psychology.

If it’s anything like the hysteria about people leaving San Francisco a few years ago, the 20 people who do move out will quietly move back a year or two later when they discover that the places they decamped to don’t have the great food or events or culture that makes this place so vibrant.
