Stores treating customers as presumptive criminals is an example of a cancerous outgrowth of capitalism. it doesn’t make good economic sense.

Write code to make being human easier. Rip code out if it makes being human harder. Write code to make caring for each other easier. Rip it out if it makes caring for each other harder.

I had forgotten how terrible Adobe is -- I still remember a time when they were "good"

I haven't used Adobe for ages, but had to get the free Reader for something

Old style installation that added 4 items that run in the background

It's just a program to read a PDF document, for whatever's sake!

Let me be very clear. It is not enough that RFK Jr. was forced to admit today that no causal relationship between Tylenol and autism has been shown.

We know that while disinformation spreads like wildfire on social media, corrections most often die on the vine.

We have zero plans to put AI in LibreOffice, of course. Our focus is privacy and letting you control your data. Some users want AI features and they can get them via optional extensions made by the community – but we won't put it in the app itself.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

This is horrifying, but I’m glad the Wikipedians are safe. It could have been far worse, given that the MAGA fascists have been trying to incite violence against Wikipedia editors, and trumpists are defenders of pedophiles like the gunman. gothamist.com/news/gunman-...

Every so often, I’m reminded of the speech at the end of Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Feels apropos these days.

remote work is like birth control or UBI atp where there’s overwhelming research consensus they improve quality of life for people they apply to, yet access is impeded or blocked by the ruling class because the thought of marginalized ppl having rich full lives makes steam come out their ears
2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.

PSA: don't trust google docs with your grammar corrections without consulting a human. I am now at 5 instances of it trying to insert past tense verbs into present tense sentences in this document. And the dirty clothes in the corner are "rank" not "ranked".

Sometimes I think about participating in The Discourse. Then I click into some threads and see the pile-ons and hot takes and axe grinding, and… nope. I’m good. I’ll stick to the occasional message and some re-posts.

I’ve spent the better part of two decades dealing with people trying to dox and harass the volunteers who make Wikipedia the incredible resource it is today.

I liked it better when they weren’t in Congress.
