Defensive Design chronology in downtown Nanaimo. Top left - big rocks to prevent sleeping or tenting. Top right - Rocks arranged by people sleeping rough to make a shelter. Bottom left - 'well, I guess we better fence it!' Bottom right - a permanent (and more attractive?) fencing of the area.

Nanaimo BC. At the Catherine Gisborne Garden downtown. With desperation and fortitude unsheltered people moved the huge rocks (that were placed there as deterrent to lying down and resting) around to create flat and private spaces to sleep. The City of Nanaimo has now fenced it off. 😟
