This is my writer’s statement on how my works engage literary history, politics, and invented poetic form.
Writer’s statement: All of these poems are entries in a fictional far-future poetry anthology spanning thousands of years, many cultures and classes, and many invented poetry forms. More importantly, this universe is torn by oppression and conflict in ways that are similar to today’s racism, classism, patriarchy and climate crisis. In big and small ways, these authors and the scholars who try to contain them reflect the social struggles of their worlds.

My crèche and my conductor didn’t like my girlfriend; We were both becoming directors, And my relations didn’t want two directors together. I flew away and a man found me. His name is Understory Shoal Troposphere Counterfloat. He told me, You know by my name that you’ll be safe with me. He became my other elder and helped me feel safe. I came back to my relations feeling safe. Then the sectioning happened and I couldn’t find him.

Been workshopping this joke on the old site and now I think the new site is ready for it
Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says his philosophy is moribund because it can’t escape the baggage of the history of western thought. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great philosopher Husserl is in town tonight. His introduction to transcendental phenomenology will restore attention to the things themselves." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Husserl!

Drop an alien that’s not from Star Wars or Star Trek

(The joke is that this is my own weird alien poetry)

[This persona and the one that follows both appear to address the inevitability of loss, and the difference between the two is perplexing to the translator. The former depicts that inevitability more naturalistically, using metaphors of a fading star (“fountain”), many-legged death in old age (“growing hollow”), and the extinction of ancient megafauna (“slow crawlers”). This persona seems unconcerned for death. The translator is unable to parse the final line, which was interpreted as a joke.]
