Fucking hell. The GFT was more important to me in my youth than theatre. Films I couldn’t see anywhere else.

Read it for the first time in the mid eighties just before starting to audition for drama school. No exaggeration to say it was life changing. 20 years on from its first production and it felt like brand new. Working class, left school at 16 and this was like starting my education.

I was a darkroom assistant in a commercial art Co. 1984. We got the first typesetting computers in Glasgow. Terrible, but everyone saw the future. A depressing day. 8 on the boards doing layout, 2 illustrators, 2 in print room. I can pretty much do all of their the jobs on my phone with my thumb.

When it was first shown on tv, it was event telly for my school. Anticipated for weeks. Like don’t even bother turning up if you haven’t seen. I didn’t see it as my sister insisted on watching the football. I listened to the entire thing, in another room, on a police scanner. Utterly terrifying.
