Physics enthusiast first, math amateur second. Squash fan and official third. Wait! I also have pugs and an amazing wife, too. Forget it...
Further to that, let me just say that when I compare history to etymology, you should know that I use etymology extensively in teaching every subject, so this comparison is not intended to undercut the importance of math history. We just reach have our own neglected topics that we emphasize

I've been out of the country, and then away from BlueSky for a while. Sorry for the crickets from me. All analogies break down, cuz they ain't the same. That being said, I will say that someone who knows the history of math has better math knowledge. And we neglect this aspect way too much.

I think mathematical history is more like etymology for language. You can understand language without etymology, but there is a depth of understanding that is inaccessible without that knowledge.
Just my opinion.

The logic here says that math consists of "isolated techniques abstracted..." and history.
I would argue that the isolated techniques are like learning how to conjugate verbs, grammar, and spelling. You can learn those things, but be completely unable to write things of value. Math is good writinng

It's one, by the way. A circle has one dimension

I actually don't consider 'ingredient' to be a meaningful distinction. I haven't fully fleshed out my thoughts, but I would say that I need a category for any item you eat. If it's edible, that would be food. I think there are connections to set theory here

Also, is there a meaningful distinction between an ingredient and a dish. Does a dish or recipe have any minimum standards of edibleness? If I eat an eraser, is it a dish?

But did they reach consensus?

So, I am devastated that I didn't learn of this event until now.
