The band I was in would work out when and who would play fills in the spaces between lyrics. We also worked a lot on the vocal harmonies, as well. Basically, I was a busy player and had to learn to listen better and play in support of the music and my bandmates. Work together to play better.

I don't play frailing/clawhammer banjo, I did have to learn how to not play too much over the singer. I also had to take over the mando chop during their solos and in some places during the song. 1/2

I had music when I was a kid in school, but I learned to play from being taken to various music festivals. After that exposure, I wanted to play and learned how to play. If a child wants to play music and the desire is there, it will happen regardless of a school music program.
