Caves and spider lover. Especially spiders in caves 🙂. Trying to answer how, why and when they and other cave critters conquered caves.
In the end, they took part in a tour of the Donja Cerovačka špilja cave, where they observed live cave animals in their natural environment.
The activity was carried out by www.irb.hr/eng and colleagues from www.hbsd.hr?lang=en.

The students listened to a lecture about caves, cave fauna, and the importance of genome sequencing for studying and protecting biodiversity. After that, they inspected preserved cave animals and compared them with surface species.

Recently, on the 111th anniversary of the discovery of Cerovac caves we organized a bioblitz activity for school children from the town of Gračac, and for the employees of the Nature Park Velebit in Croatia. This was done as part of biodiversitygenomics.eu project.

How big are genomes of cave spiders? Thanks to the Feulgen method I will soon find out. I was hosted by Prof. Jean-François Flot at Université libre de Bruxelles, and had the best teacher, Mohammed Tawfeeq. The stay was sponsored by the SRF grant of TheLinneanSociety & @systassn.bsky.social
